Taika Waititi’s ‘Star Wars’ Movie Is Officially ‘On Ice’
While promoting his new movie, “Klara and the Sun,” Waititi revealed that his “Star Wars” movie, originally announced for 2020, is currently “on hold.”
“I hate to break it to you, but we’re going to put it on ice, and we’re working on another thing together,” Waititi told Inverse.
His publicist reportedly declined to share further details about why he was no longer prioritizing the project.
“Well, that’s your answer,” Waititi said. “I don’t even know how to dress it up or even make it vague.”
“It’s really frozen. I have four other films that I’m trying to do,” he continued. “The ice ages are ending… Who knows?”
The Director previously spoke about the film in January

At the premiere of the film “Fing!” At Sundance, Waititi told Variety that he was trying to harness the magic of the original trilogy for his film.
“I’m just trying to go back and use a little more fun from the original movies, which is what I remember [from] on them,” he said at the time.
“The stakes are very high, and there are bad things going on, but there’s also a lot of fun to be had in these movies. That’s what I was trying to bring back,” continued Waititi. “I was trying to work in a world that was a little bit different from that because they have so many things going on in that place. For me to do something there, it had to be a little bit different and a little bit more of its own thing.”
Taika Waititi reportedly turned in a script

Vice President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy to date in her exit interview in January 2026 that Taika Waititi “turned in a script that I think is funny and brilliant. It’s just not my decision, especially when I got my foot out the door.”
At the time, she revealed that Donald Glover has also turned in a script for a project around his character, a younger Lando Calrissian. The project has been described as both a film and a series at various points in its production. Right now, fans aren’t sure what, if anything, will come of the project.
Kennedy also talked about what happened to “The Hunt for Ben Solo” and said, “Steven Soderbergh and Adam Driver turned a script that Scott Burns wrote in. It was just brilliant. Anything is possible if someone is willing to take a risk.”
What happened to Adam Driver’s ‘Star Wars’ movie?

Back in October 2025, Adam Driverwho portrayed the redeemed Kylo Ren and Ben Solo in the “Star Wars” series, revealed that he had been working with the director Steven Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns on a film that would take place after the death of his character in “The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019.
He told the Associated Press that Lucasfilm approved the film, but Disney executives later shut it down.
“We took the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea. They totally understood our angle and why we were doing it,” Driver said at the time. “We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was it.”
“It was called ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ and it was really good,” said Driver. “But it’s not there anymore, so I can finally talk about it.”
