Michael Mann previously detailed the military training behind ‘heat’

Years before Saturday’s tragedy, Mann talked about the extensive preparation behind the famous street shooting in “Heat.”
In a 2012 interview with the Directors Guild of America, he recalled taking over three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department target areas for rehearsals. His team recreated the filming location in the center of the city, marking where cars, mailboxes and covers would be placed.
The team trained over several days under strict safety regulations. Mann said the preparation included rehearsals with live ammunition fired at fixed targets, while blanks were used when filming the scene on location. The goal was for Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, and Tom Sizemore to handle their weapons with the confidence and skill of the experienced criminals they were portraying.
For now, no further details about his recovery have been included in the report after Saturday’s accident.
