Note: This story contains spoilers from “VisionQuest” Episodes 1-2.
“VisionQuest” said goodbye to one of the truest OGs of the MCU in its first two episodes, and it was definitely an emotional moment for Paul Bettany.
Taking place approximately four and a half years after the events of “WandaVision,” “VisionQuest” finds that synthezoid fans know and love Scotland. He works as a bartender at a pub he and Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) used to go to, while trying to make sense of the Vision memories he received at the end of “WandaVision.”
He’s been living off the grid, but when a bounty hunter called Paladin (Todd Stashwick) is hired to find him, Vision’s peace is shattered – as is a part of his body. See, Paladin knows that adamantium bullets are the only bullets that will affect the synthezoid, and they will definitely do some damage. Vision’s system fails miserably, leaving the AI humans in his head scrambling to try and save his body. These AIs include JARVIS, EDITH, FRIDAY, Dum-E, U and Ultron.
Eventually, it will become clear that one of these AI systems will have to sacrifice themselves so that the energy resources used to power them are stronger than the others. This is your last exit before spoilers, okay?
The AI assistant that jumps the metaphorical grenade is none other than JARVIS, played again in human form by James D’Arcy. He played the real human version of the character in “Agent Carter” and returned in “Avengers: Endgame.” Of course, long-time Marvel fans will know that Bettany got his start in the MCU by voicing the original sidekick JARVIS, and he admits that it was a farewell to that character in this way.
“Yeah, and I haven’t seen James D’Arcy since we did ‘Master and Commander: The Far Side the World,’ you know, years and years and years ago,” Bettany told TheWrap. “It was so great to work with him again, and then he left too soon.”
That said, Bettany remains optimistic about the whole thing, with the MCU’s moves, and the complexity of the new Vision.
“The good news is, Jarvis’ DNA is part of Vision,” he said. “So there’s always a way back.”
“VisionQuest” is now streaming on Disney+.
