Here’s a little Clayface back story from the comics

Clayface is represented by several characters in DC Comics, with Basil Karlo and Matt Hagen among the most famous versions. Basil Karlo was a former Gotham actor whose job destroyed his fascination with fame, eventually leading him to become a shape-shifting criminal that anyone could impersonate. Matt Hagen took on another version of Clayface. He was mainly depicted as a treasure hunter who gained the ability to transform his body after being exposed to a mysterious substance. Both versions use their transformation abilities to challenge Batman, while at the same time being portrayed as characters struggling with their identity and situation.

Tom definitely playing Matt Hagen’s version in the new movie.
