“The Batman: Part II” will soon begin production with Steven Soderbergh stepping in to finish principal photography while director Matt Reeves continues to deal with a family issue, IndieWire has confirmed.
Production on DC’s Batman series starring Robert Pattinson has been delayed for just over a week due to Reeves’ absence.
“As Matt Reeves continues to deal with an ongoing family issue, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on ‘The Batman Part 2.’ Matt and Steven will be working closely with the cast and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film,” the studio said in a statement to IndieWire.
Soderbergh himself also commented: “I thought Matt Reeves’ work on ‘The Batman’ was amazing; it was deliberate, specific, and very clever. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate a film that seamlessly integrates with what has already been shot so that Matt can finish his film properly.”
“The Batman: Part II” is scheduled for release on February 18, 2028, and that date has not yet moved amid the delays. There will be a six-year gap between the original “Batman” starring Pattinson and the sequel after the original’s $772 million worldwide.
The new film sees Pattinson reprise his role as Bruce Wayne, with Colin Farrell returning as The Penguin and Andy Serkis returning as Alfred, and newcomers Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch. There are rumors that Stan is playing Harvey Dent, or Two Face, but that is not clear. The only thing he had to say about the film to our Anne Thompson is that the film is “in a very deep and deep winter”.
Soderbergh is an amazing name to work in a filler capacity, let alone a tentpole superhero movie. He obviously has a history with Warner Bros. on Ocean films and with HBO and HBO Max on films like “No Sudden Move”. He’s one of the fastest and most innovative directors working today, but this would represent his biggest film in a while and his only studio film since 2023’s “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.” And although he has long been based in New York, he is now based in London where “The Batman: Part II” is shooting.
His last documentary was Neon’s “The Christophers” this year, and he directed a documentary, “John Lennon: The Last Interview,” which premiered at Cannes but is currently out of print.
