‘The Bourne Identity’ (2002)

Two fishermen rescue a man who was drifting in the Mediterranean Sea. The man is barely alive, the man does not remember his past or even his name. But after meeting two Zurich officers who leave him breathless, he begins to believe that he is someone dangerous. Turns out, he’s right – it’s Jason Bourne (Damon), a master assassin hired by the CIA’s top-secret black ops program, and it seems everyone in the world wants him dead. Marie is the only person he can trust (Franca Potente), an innocent German tourist who helps Jason first for the money and then out of growing frustration for him. It’s the two of them against the world, and the numbers are definitely not in their favor.

The Bourne movies changed the way action movies were made, and it all started with an under-the-radar mid-budget action thriller adapted from an 80’s father’s novel read cover to cover. Starring then – pretty boy Damon, The Bourne Identity It shouldn’t have been as successful as it was, but for the insufferable story (who is Jason Bourne?) and well-staged action sequences by the director Doug Liman make The Bourne Identity a genre classic – and a franchise was born that continues to thrive today.

‘Call Me By Your Name’ (2017)

Some take advantage of the summer holidays and are extremely active; for 17-year-old Elio (Chalamet), all he wants to do is lie around the pool and play the piano. His family is spending the summer in a gorgeous Italian cottage, so can you blame him? But Elio’s remote image is disturbed by the arrival of Oliver (Armie Hammer), a tall, blonde, good-looking student in his thirties who inevitably annoys Elio. But as the weeks go by, Elio and Oliver grow closer until they realize that their unlikely friendship is turning into something more incredible – lust and love.

For anyone longing for the lazy days of summer, Call me with your Name it’s the film only to download those fantasies. It is a great film in many ways: the acting, especially by Chalamet and Michael Stuhlbarg as Elio’s thoughtful parent; the soundtrack, which includes a few nostalgic pop songs from Troubadour Sufjan Stevens; and the cinematography, which transports you in the warmth of the Italian sun. But what is being done Call me with your Name the way it faithfully captures a pivotal moment in a teenager’s life, when love is the most important thing in the world, is an instant classic. It’s a deeply emotional love story that realizes that the pain of letting go is just as important to remember as the joy of finding someone you truly feel with.

‘The Devil Wears Prada’ (2005)

A 20th Century Fox Corp. film. All rights reserved.

Want? Unreasonable? Dude? Yes, these adjectives are probably accurate when used to describe Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), imperial editor-in-chief Runway magazine But honestly, can you blame her? She is surrounded by people who are never ready, recommending a fashion spread that her magazine has done before and she can’t remember what to wear with that thing she attended sometime last month with that person. To make matters worse, her new second assistant, Emily Andrew (Anne Hathaway), unfortunately unprepared, dresses in a lumpy blue sweater, can’t get Starbucks coffee when she wants it and it’s just a little fat. Dude? Well, you would too if you had to walk in her size 6 Manolo Blaniks.

There are some movies that are just perfect, and The Devil Wears Prada there is one of them. It’s a non-stop comedy that, despite being over 20 years old, hasn’t aged a bit. Even all the hautre couture in the film still works, with Andrew’s mid-film makeover still the envy of every budding fashionista. The direction and the script are of a high standard, but it is the cast that makes this Devil so attractive and irresistible. Streep is perfect as Miranda, a boss who demands as much perfection from herself as from those around her, while Hathaway and Emily Blunt as the first assistant Emily is a brilliantly funny duo worthy of comparison to Lucy and Ethel.
