Netflix adds an AI Discover option to the TV app

Netflix is increasingly embracing AI when it comes to helping subscribers find what they want to watch next. AI Discover is a new tab on the Netflix TV app that will be available to a small group of members before rolling out to more subscribers.

The first experience within AI Discover is based on topics. Users will be asked to select one of several topics, each previewed by a clip from a show or movie. These themes range from general sentiments, such as “Scare Me,” to categories based on who watches, such as “Family Movie Night,” to selections based on time constraints, such as “Quick Watches.” After a topic is selected, Netflix will display its list of recommendations. As users search, more specific topics will appear. Users will also have the ability to select “Something Different” and receive a new set of recs.

Additionally, each title will have a “Tune Your Recommendations” button next to “Play” and “My List.” This option allows users to either keep a recommended title in their lineup or tell Netflix not to recommend that title again.

The tool is built to change its recommendations based on what users tell the platform and is designed to keep learning. It’s basically a more interactive version of the streamer’s current algorithm.

“Think of AI Discover as our test kitchen: we’re experimenting with new recipes to discover, and your usage and feedback help us decide which ones to keep, improve or serve,” a press release about the offering reads. “Some may even find their way into the core Netflix experience.”

AI Discover will first be rolled out to US members watching Netflix in English on supported TVs. The option will gradually become available to more people in the coming weeks.
