Lauren Graham remember a very different ceremony to Gilmore Girls than the one he gets today.

Laurenplayed by Lorelai Gilmore, looks back on the show’s original run and explains why she thinks some viewers may not have given it a chance.

During the program on Tuesday (October 6) of Hey Dude… The 90s Called! hosted by Christina Taylor and David Lascher, Lauren pushed back with the idea that the series was an instant success, per People.

“What’s also funny to me is when people talk about the show, ‘that successful show.’ It wasn’t a successful show then,” she said, arguing that it wanted to air a “long, good piece” as opposed to “must-see TV” as Friends.

Gilmore Girls Star Melissa McCarthy recently offered some insight into why it was “very difficult” to make it on the show.

Lauren went on to say that “Girls” in the title may have led viewers to believe the show was aimed at women or a younger audience and that perception may have prevented people from discovering the “smart and well-written” show it really was.

“It wasn’t a big hit then. It wasn’t a big deal. It had its fans, but it’s grown in a way you couldn’t have imagined,” she explained.

Gilmore Girls based on her character and Alexis Bledeland Rory, a mother and daughter living in the fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow. It ran from 2000 to 2007 and was followed by a four-part Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life in 2016.
