Kevin Costner’s replacement film ‘Yellowstone’ is officially coming to free streaming

After two prestigious events – one of which was a huge success (Dances With Wolves), and the other a devastating flop (The Postman)—Kevin Earner chose to strip things down for his third attempt as a director, Open field. Released in 2003 to critical and commercial success, the film stars Costner. Robert Duvalland Annette Beningquietly proved to be the ideal formula for the Yellow stone star to bring it to television, where it was the face of the West in the 21st century. While his range pales in comparison to his previous film credits and his latest film, The Bad World Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, Open field remains Costner’s best directorial effort to date, as it honors the simple beauty of classic Westerns that he has been imitating all his life. For Yellow stone fans missing Costner’s presence, it’s time to check out this undiscovered gem on Tubi.

Ideally, Kevin Costner (or any director for that matter) would churn out a strong, entertaining and thoughtful western every few years. The genre that once ruled cinema and television in the 1950s is almost dormant today, and now, audiences look back on films like Open field as unsolicited benefits that we did not highlight at release. Following “Boss” Spearman (Duvall) and his band of cowboys who confront a ruthless Montana cattle baron in a war zone, the movie is like a classic Hollywood Western directed by Howard Hawks– a story of independence and perseverance in the open West, and the interpersonal dynamics between noble cowboys and fast gunslingers.

Costner’s direction in Open field it is not nearly as clear as it was Dances With Wolvesbut it is certainly his most definitive work in terms of solid studio filmmakingand he lacks the selfishness of the work he did before which had to be majestic for the sake of supremacy. The casting of Robert Duvall as the film’s true lead was a clear indication of Costner’s choice to restrain himself. Starring the late Duvall, Costner also plays the high-profile actor’s apprentice, the archetypal brash and reactive cowboy who needs a mentor. The Father of children and Apocalypse now star giving one of his best performances as the ready-made cattle leader who faces the perils of the open West, Costner directed his breakout roles in the late ’80s and early ’90s as handsome heroes with an edge.

‘Open Range’ created the Blueprint for Modern Westerns

If released today, Open fieldstarry Diego Luna, Michael Gambon, Abraham Benrubi, and Michael Jeterof course it would be an 8-part streaming miniseries. For those who didn’t know better, one might think that Costner’s movie was just another movie. Taylor Sheridanand neo-Westerns for Paramount. Some of the best movies of the 20th century have already said everything that needs to be said about American history and the expansion of the West. In that case, the wisest direction to take is modern Westerns use the genre as a backdrop for the interpersonal dynamics between the various inhabitants of this world. Open field captures the broad character drama of prime time soaps like Yellow stonewith the film dealing with ideas about parenthood, love, and one’s journey to self-discovery.

Westerns represented a major turning point for the United States, and the harsh themes of the genre reveal the darkest corners of the country’s history. Many movies in the shadow of The Seekers and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly forced to live up to their lofty heights. Kevin Costner’s previous directorial efforts, while well-crafted, suggest that the filmmaker-turned-filmmaker is too desperate to show audiences that he is debunking the myths of the time. By freeing itself from the pressure of being the definitive western of today, Open field allowing the viewer to interpret the film as a blank canvaswhich is very similar to a genre known for male protagonists with internal emotions and large landscapes set against the horizon.

Beautifully constructed, superbly actuated, and tonally balanced, Open field offers another side to Costner’s screen persona. In another timeline, he could have been a great filmmaker adapting whatever Western novel he had, or, to keep up with contemporary trends, working from a Taylor Sheridan script. At their best, big screen Westerns uphold the traditions of the classics while continuing to refine the formula. Open field it is not exactly a revisionist Western, but a post-modern Western of sorts.
