Jay-Z officially taking over in 2027 Super Bowl halftime showbut the news has drawn new attention to a surprising admission he made about choosing himself for the prestigious ceremony.
The rapper, who has helped select halftime performers since partnering with the NFL in 2019, previously admitted he was worried he would too soon appear “sensitive”.
Now, after years of helping other artists take over football’s biggest stage, Jay-Z is stepping into the scene himself. However, a statement from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell gives another perspective on the decision.
Jay-Z Officially Confirmed as 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Headliner
The NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation officially announced on October 26 that Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show on February 14, 2027.
The show will be held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, marking the first time the 25-time Grammy winner will headline the event.
The announcement was made during ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” broadcast featuring the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.
Reflecting on the milestone, Jay-Z celebrated the journey from his debut album, “Reasonable Doubt,” to the Super Bowl stage.
“Thirty years of music, work and culture on the biggest stage in the world. This race is still a dream come true,” said the rapper.
The confirmation follows an October 20 report by The Blast indicating that the rapper was expected to headline the show, with Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber reportedly among other artists being considered.
However, the news also raised questions about Jay-Z’s previous reluctance to choose himself.
Jay-Z was previously afraid that he would watch ‘Self’
In a 2024 interview with Entertainment tonightJay-Z asked if he would ever headline the halftime show.
Instead of taking the opportunity immediately, the rapper acknowledged concerns about using his influence in the election process to secure the attention for himself.
“I thought it would be selfish to pick myself too soon, so maybe one year, maybe,” he explained.
At the time, his comments suggested he wasn’t rejecting performance altogether. Instead, timing seemed to be his main concern.
Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, has been heavily involved in organizing the Super Bowl halftime show since 2019.
His involvement has been influential in deciding who gets one of the most prestigious performance opportunities in the music industry.
As a result, his decision to preside over the event itself creates an unusual situation in which the person who helps shape the show becomes his main attraction.
The NFL Commissioner reveals that he wanted to play Jay-Z for years

Despite Jay-Z’s doubts earlier, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell revealed that getting the rapper to the half-time level was a long-term goal.
In the official announcement, Goodell revealed that he always hoped Jay-Z would headline the halftime show.
“I only had one request: that JAŸ-Z would take the stage himself one day, when the moment felt right for him,” explained the commissioner of the NFL.
Goodell’s announcement adds an important dimension to the controversy surrounding the rapper’s decision.
Rather than an unexpected move to claim the spotlight, Jay-Z’s upcoming performance fulfills a potential that was discussed when the partnership began.
Interestingly, the rapper had previously been willing to perform at the Super Bowl even before his company was involved in the NFL.
According to the Los Angeles Timesan earlier proposal included a performance of “Run This Town” with Rihanna and Kanye West, Jay-Z’s arrangement was rejected.
Now, nearly eight years after starting the Roc Nation partnership, the rapper is preparing to headline on his own terms.
