John Wilson’s next trick? Showing his special audience “how to” on tour as Harry Styles. The “History of Concrete” filmmaker and “How to with John Wilson” creator is said to be hard at work on his next project: a concert documentary about Styles and his current “Together, Together” tour for Universal Pictures Content Group.
The news was first reported by Variety, but eagle-eyed social media denizens have already been sent into overdrive after videos of Wilson following and filming Styles began making the rounds over the weekend. IndieWire has reached out to Universal for comment.
According to Variety, Wilson has been filming Styles since August. The pop star is in the middle of his final residency at Madison Square Garden, which will run through October and is the biggest single residency ever at the iconic venue. According to the outlet, “Wilson is filming for a doc that is expected to be a mix of live shows and a glimpse into the world of Styles. One source said it will feature real human stories about everyone involved in the tour – from the singer and his fans to several other behind-the-scenes people.”
Variety says the project was produced by “Universal Pictures Content Group, Peanut World Pictures, and Styles. UPCG will own global rights to the film. No distribution plans have been set yet, but “the insider said the doc could be set for a theatrical release through Universal.”
As Variety reminds us, while Wilson may seem like an odd choice for such a show, he did start directing music videos. And concert docs are big business these days, even from renowned filmmakers, Matt Donnelly at the outlet notes that “Billie Eilish has hired ‘Titanic’ and ‘Avatar’ mastermind James Cameron to direct her own theatrical concert ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour,’ which was released in theaters this summer.
And, remember a little movie called “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”?
Wilson is on a hot streak lately, as IndieWire reported earlier this week that his first documentary, “The History of Concrete,” recently passed $2 million at the box office. We expect this next one to do a smidge bigger.
