The year 2027 Met Gala topic is already prompting an unexpected suggestion for the guest list: Adam Sandler. Known for his oversized shirts, basketball shorts, and relaxed approach to fashion, the actor is hardly a standard choice for fashion’s biggest night. However, with next year’s show celebrating casual wear, some fans believe his signature style makes him a worthy candidate for an invite.
The Met Gala 2027 Theme will celebrate everyday fashion

Next year’s Met Gala has a new theme after John Galliano pulled out of the event in August. The original plan was to honor the British fashion designer, but after backlash over his 2011 criminal conviction for his antisemitic outburst in Paris, Galliano voluntarily stepped down.
On Nov. 5, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and the Met Gala will celebrate the theme of “fantastic: Fashion and the Poetry of the Everyday,” as reported by Vogue.
The exhibition examines the subject through two perspectives. One will look at how everyday wardrobe staples, such as shirts and jeans, can be elevated to high fashion, while the other will explore how unconventional materials, including paper, aluminum and plastic, can be repurposed as wearable works of art.
How the Met Gala Theme took shape
Andrew Bolton, who has been with the Costume Institute since 2002 and has been Curator for over 10 years, admitted to the fashion publication that he had no other subject after the Galliano show fell through.
He then thought it was better to create a new idea instead of just replacing one designer with another. In addition, he wanted a subject with a “contemporary resonance”.
“It was really important to create a show that wasn’t just a masterpiece show or something we could do a little bit easier. I wanted it to be as challenging and exciting and beautiful as John [Galliano] the show would have been there,” Bolton noted.
His ideas led him to think about how “people experience clothing in their daily lives” in terms of “use and touch and movement and sensation.”
The Internet Wants Adam Sandler At The Prestigious Fashion Event
Following the announcement, social media quickly suggested a celebrity they believe deserves a spot on the special guest list, with many arguing that the star would be a perfect fit for the theme.
“If Adam Sandler isn’t on the guest list for the 2027 Met Gala, what’s even the point?” one user said. Another commenter wrote, “I’d just show up dressed like Adam Sandler.
Meanwhile, some posted edited photos showing Sandler in casual clothes on the Met Steps, where attendees usually show off their outfits for the prestigious fashion event.
Another joked that the fashion world has “finally caught up with the Adam Sandler vibe”.
The actor’s style gave birth to ‘Sandlercore’
Adam Sandler is known for his relaxed approach to fashion, and rarely trades casual clothes for traditional red carpet attire. His signature style revolves around oversized shirts, hoodies, baggy shorts, and sneakers, prioritizing comfort over formality.
In early December 2021, a Google search report showed 10 celebrity names with the best mobile style for that year, and the actor’s name took the No. 1 spot. He beat other stars, including Harry Styles, Britney Spears, Doja Cat, Cher, and Lizzo, among others.
Before the results came out, TikTok users started posting videos and photos of Sandler with the hashtag “Sandlercore,” creating a fashion trend inspired by Sandler’s relaxed appearance. Over the years, some people on social media have also called for a Sandler-themed Met Gala.
Adam Sandler has been named a Vogue Fashion Icon

After the Google search report in 2021, Vogue Sandler named his Fashion Icon. In the feature article, writer Liana Satenstein wrote that she was not completely surprised by the result, especially because of the actor’s “pandemic style”.
“The past 18 months have been dominated by all things cushy: sweatpants and sweatshirts. Sandler has been embodying this look for a long time,” she wrote.
Sandler has repeatedly explained that he does not like wearing formal clothes, saying that they restrict him, make him itchy and ruin his mood. Over the years, he has mostly been with his personal style even on red carpet events, except for a few occasions.
As for being recognized as a mover, Sandler said it was an “accident. “Here I’m wearing a goofy outfit, and I don’t know. I don’t think about it, but I appreciate you saying that,” he said.
