“Dancing With the Stars” Season 35 marks Ezra Sosa’s third year as a full-time professional dancer on the reality competition, and he shares what would make his career even more fulfilling.

In an interview with Out magazine, the 25-year-old said he wants a male partner in future seasons of the show. “I’m working my magic! I definitely want that to happen 100%,” he said, noting that he has set his sights on the goal since he was part of the show.

“I’ve been so passionate about same-sex dance in general, especially being a part of the queer community,” Sosa said, noting that he already told the show’s casting director of his desire. “We’ll see what happens over time.”

‘Dancing with the Stars’ History of a Same-Sex Pair

Sosa’s dream is not impossible, as same-sex couples have appeared on “DWTS” in past seasons, showing that the competition is not limited to traditional male-female pairings.

The first same-sex couple was in season 30 in 2021, when “Dance Moms” alum JoJo Siwa was paired with pro dancer Jenna Johnson. At the time, the show released a statement calling it a milestone decision that “gave visibility to the ballroom.”

The historic same-sex partnership was followed by the male-male pair of Shangela and Gleb Savchenko in Season 32. The old name, DJ Pierce, identifies as a cisgender man when he is not in drag, and said that he had no doubts about the male-male partnership because of the great support of his partner.

In the current season there was a female-female pair with Sarah Jane Nader and her professional partner Hailey Bills, but they were eliminated in Week 1.

Inside Ezra Sosa’s ‘DWTS’ Tour

Sosa joined “DWTS” in 2021 as part of the show’s dance troupe and a professional stand-up dancer. In 2023, he entered Week 2 and played with contestant Charity Lawson after her pro partner, Artem Chigvintsev, tested positive for COVID.

Sosa was promoted to full-time pro on Season 33 in 2024, and was partnered with con artist Anna Delvey. The pair were eliminated on Week 2.

In Season 34, Sosa was paired with Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles, and the two made it to the finals, finishing in third place.

Currently, Sosa is with actress Julia Stiles. While the pair have been fan favourites, they currently sit near the bottom of the leaderboard.

The Dancer Grew Up In A Conservative Mormon Home

The Provo, Utah native was raised in a Mormon home by an Argentine father and a Mexican mother. Sosa revealed that he had a hard time, telling AND! News that he was “moved into a box” and had days when he was kicked out of the home because of his sexuality.

Dance became a kind of revolution, saying, “I was able to go to a dance studio, play some music, and I was able to express myself in ways that words could not.” The choreographer Talia Favia became his mother during the difficult time.

Sosa eventually left home for good and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a dance career. His parents have since divorced, and he has mended his relationship with his mother, but is estranged from his father.

At one point, Sosa was worried about being an openly gay pro dancer on “DWTS” because some people unaffiliated with the show expressed their concern.

In 2021, JoJo Siwa, who became Sosa’s close friend, accidentally posted him on Instagram Live. In the end, that made the dancer face his fears and found the courage to be true to himself in public. He came out to the producers of “DWTS” and found that his fears were unfounded, receiving great support.

Sosa was the second openly gay pro dancer on the show, after former pro Louis van Amstel, and the first gay Latino professional to join the series.

“Representation is really important. When I joined the show, I never thought there would be a place for a gay professional on ‘Dancing With the Stars. I’m very lucky to be here,” Sosa said. Out.
