Crystal Hefner she would take her back walking down the aisle with Hugh Hefner if she could. The “After the Mansion” podcast host talks openly about her marriage to the late Playboy founder, saying she questions the decision every day. Now 40, Crystal takes a look back at how she entered the world of Playboy, why she thinks Hugh was looking for a woman with a difficult history, and the famous name she decided to leave behind.
Crystal Hefner says she will never marry Hugh again
Crystal didn’t hesitate when asked if she would make the same decision to marry the publishing mogul. “If I could go back, I wouldn’t have [married Hugh]” she said on Page Six, “I came from a broken home. I didn’t have a father. And I know now that Hef chose people he could easily manipulate, as he was. “
The two married in 2012, four years after meeting at a Halloween party at the Playboy Mansion.
According to the outlet, private conversations helped bring them together before Crystal moved into a Los Angeles estate and became one of Hugh’s lovers. She was named Playboy’s Playmate of the Month for its December 2009 issue and eventually became his wife three years later.
Their marriage lasted until Hugh’s death in September 2017 at the age of 91.
Crystal claims that Hugh was looking for women he could control

Looking back, Crystal said she believed the women Hugh was chasing shared something more than just their looks. She said he deliberately chose participants whose backgrounds made them more vulnerable to manipulation. “Hef reportedly had a high IQ,” Crystal continued. “I always thought, why didn’t he want someone on his intellectual level? And it’s because those people are harder to control. So he chose the women who came from broken homes and broken backgrounds.”
Crystal brought her own upbringing into that discussion, linking her father’s absence and her family’s situation to how she now understands their relationship.
She regrets her marriage after disturbing bedroom allegations

Crystal’s comments come amid a series of public appearances in which she has shared troubling allegations about life inside the mansion. During an appearance on the “Lisa Guerrero Unleashed” podcast, she described bedroom experiences that she said crossed extreme boundaries.
“There were times I was very uncomfortable in the bedroom,” Crystal said. “In the bedroom things would happen that ended up just not being okay.”
She also said that Hugh tried to force couples Kristina and Karissa Shannon to have sex with each other.
Crystal says Hugh’s influence has helped shield him from criticism

Beyond her marriage, Crystal also focused on the public image surrounding the Playboy founder. She told Page Six that she believes Hugh’s connections and influence helped keep a bad cover up while he was alive.
“We also need people to know how powerful this man was when he was alive, that the media wanted this man in their pocket so they didn’t put out anything negative about Hef,” Hefner told the outlet. “He was rude, he was narcissistic, he was a pornographer who hurt the world.”
Crystal has also been talking about the famous men who have visited the mansion. Her recent comments include allegations about Jon Lovitz and Jack Nicholsonand Lovitz later dismissed and mocked her comments. Her last interview, however, puts her own relationship with Hugh at the heart of the conversation.
Crystal has already dropped the Hefner name

Crystal’s break from her old life has included a legal name change. According to Page Six, she considered whether keeping the Hefner surname would help her use the platform “to do good for the world or for women,” before deciding to cut ties.
She legally returned to her maiden name, Crystal Harris, in late 2025 and married marine biologist James Ward.
