Christa Pike wants to end solitary confinement after her execution

Christa Pike’s the legal team says Pike was wrongly kept in solitary confinement while recovering from her failure in Tennessee.

Her lawyers challenged the conditions in which she is incarcerated with an emergency motion filed in federal court on Friday, October 30, asking the court to enforce a 2024 settlement agreement that ended the 28 years she previously spent in solitary confinement.

The motion argues that prison officials are violating the settlement agreement previously reached with the state “by keeping Ms. Pike in solitary confinement indefinitely in the prison hospital after the failure of the Tennessee Department of Corrections that left her seriously injured.”

Pike, the only woman on Tennessee’s death row, survived two injections of pentobarbital on September 30, when she was scheduled to be executed.

After Pike was released from the hospital on Oct. 9, she remained isolated from other inmates at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, in violation of the 2024 settlement agreement, according to the filing.

In an affidavit supporting the emergency move, Pike detailed her current confinement conditions, writing that she continues to be in solitary confinement while suffering casualties from her execution, including “severe burns, nerve damage, difficulty sleeping and severe psychological distress.”
