Chicago PDThe Intelligence Unit is about to get a new member with the arrival of Kevin Atwater’s baby – but are married couple Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek ready for their own bundle of joy?
“I don’t know Burgess has baby fever,” Marina Squerciati told only Us of her character’s headroom in season 14. “I think Burgess deserves a baby, but who knows?”
Squerciati, 42 – who has played Burgess since the show premiered in 2014 – noted that on the Wednesday, October 14, episode of the hit NBC series, the detective will be watching Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) baby pictures and says, “Oh, this baby is so cute.”

Squerciati noted that, after Burgess and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) season 7 pregnancy loss experience, a new little one could be just what they need. (The couple already share adopted daughter Makayla.)
“Yes, she should have a child. Let’s do that,” she said.

During the season 14 premiere on Wednesday, October 7, Atwater learned that his girlfriend, Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom), he was in labor. Ruzek, his longtime BFF, grabbed the keys and decided to drive him to the hospital to meet his newborn.
Chicago PD an exhibitionist Gwen Sigan told only Us that next week viewers will get to meet Atwater’s baby and see him as a father before the actor leaves the series this season. (News broke in July that Hawkins is leaving the series after becoming the OG character.)

Lori Allen/NBCWhile Atwater’s departure is bittersweet, Squerciati was reassured Us that fans have a lot to look forward to for Burgess and Ruzek as they continue their lives as partners inside and outside of the CPD.
“Burzek has moved to another house [and a] a new neighborhood. They’ve been in the same thing, you know, crumbling the house for a while,” said the actress. “And I think Burgess is very unhappy. But she pushed, so, for this. I don’t know that she feels comfortable.”
Squerciati joked, “Maybe she’s also losing her touch on reality or her grip. But you know, who’s to say? I only know a lot. I don’t look that good. I’ll tell you that.”
When it comes to Burgess’s relationship with her husband, Squerciati was adamant Us that they are in a good place.

Lori Allen/NBC“I think we’re sailing smoothly,” she said. “I think we’ve been bumpy for 13 years. The audience deserves smooth sailing with, like, a little bit of Burgess’s mind, like, on edge.”
Squerciati also teased that outside of the Burgess romance, she will have a challenge at work this season.
“This year, I’m going undercover in a way I’ve never done before, and that was fun to explore,” she said. “[I] definitely sink my teeth into it [it].”
Chicago PD airs on NBC Wednesdays at 10pm ET.
