LONDON — Leading football pundit Jamie Carragher has apologized to Aston Villa for comments he made on a podcast which led the English club to say they were taking legal action against the former Liverpool defender.
Carragher used an expletive towards Villa fans who had criticized him for suggesting that Villa manager Unai Emery should consider taking over Manchester United if Michael Carrick was sacked under pressure.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast which aired on Thursday, Carragher said that “there is a chain in football, whether you like it or not” and that “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”
Late on Friday, a post on Villa’s account on X, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, read: “Aston Villa will commence legal proceedings against Jamie Carragher for his inappropriate insults towards the club and its fans.
“Aston Villa will not let anyone stop our ascent in English and European football.”
Carragher responded with his own post on Saturday X.
“I would like to apologize to Aston Villa, the owners & their fans,” he wrote. “My language was this week & wrong
“I can assure the Villa fans that laughing was an understatement but I understand it didn’t come across that way, so apologies.
Carragher is a major name in football punditry, working for British broadcaster Sky Sports and American broadcaster CBS since retiring in 2013.
In 2018, Carragher was briefly suspended by Sky after he was filmed slashing a 14-year-old girl’s side through his car window.
