9-1-1’s Oliver Stark defends Buck’s Parentage Choice for Theo

9-1-1and Oliver Stark came to his character’s defense as the show continues to introduce surprising twists – such as making Buck consider giving up on his son.

On Thursday, November 5, the episode of the successful ABC program, Buck (Stark) was crumbling under the pressure of nursing his 4-year-old son, Theo. The two were not adjusting well to living together – especially since Buck refused to be Theo’s parent.

As a result Theo threw a tantrum at the park, which made some parents call the cops on Buck. He realized that the issue was that Theo did not see him as a father but as a temporary carer after losing his parents.

After a conversation with Eddie (Ryan Guzman), Buck said he thought it would be better if he didn’t look after Theo anymore.

“It’s important to remember that everything Buck does is with the best of intentions,” Stark, 35, told us exclusively about Buck’s journey this season. “He’s making decisions day by day in this new role he’s found himself in. He always thinks it’s the right decision and, obviously, we’ve seen that it’s not always, and he struggles with it.”

The actor urged viewers to be patient with Buck. “As with any new parent, and that’s the role he’s in now, you figure it out as you go,” he told Us. “No one is good at anything right away. You have to make mistakes and you have to learn along the way, and it’s just part of the process he’s in now.”

He continued: “It’s a very difficult situation. There’s a lot of trauma involved. I’m sure there’s a level of guilt involved as well.

Stark went on to say that he was excited about what the new arc could lead to.

“Any idea I had [about the story line] when I first heard about it [vanished] after the last season,” he said, “I was pretty much on board, and I’m still here. I love working with the twins who played Theo. I’m really excited about the growth it’s going to mean for Buck – seeing it as a mirror in so many ways and how he looks at himself and how he can grow through that and how he can bring different characters in and out of his life. I just think it’s a big step for him, and I’m excited – really – about the story.”

9-1-1 airs on ABC Thursdays at 8pm ET.
