Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes seeing Robert Downey Jr. remove offenses and mock his opponents with clear and elaborate speeches; as a warrior with a mind far superior to his opponents, he often binds people in theories that make them angry. However, the phrase that defines the character is only two words. In one brief exchange with a co-star Rachel McAdams, we can see how the great solver of mysteries soon reveals her vulnerability, and the feelings that hide under his pulse.
‘Sherlock Holmes’ shows his true qualities
Towards the end of the 2009 film, it was revealed that Irene Adler (McAdams), a brilliant and cunning thief who was romantically involved with Sherlock (Downey), is working for a secret assistant overseeing the main plot of the story, around a plot to seize control of Britain. A dramatic confrontation takes place between Holmes and Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), the architect of the plot, with Irene’s life in danger. Sherlock conquers the Black Forest, which falls to his death, and rescues Irene, with the pair having a brief moment together before the police arrive. She tells him that her employer’s name is Moriarty, a brilliant man who found her “weak spot”. When Sherlock asks what it was, she just looks at him and laughs.
Realizing, Sherlock leaves, with Irene joking through hidden tears: “You’ll miss me, Sherlock.” Turning back to her for a moment, he replied, “Unfortunately, yes,” before kissing her forehead and walking away. In the silence of a construction site overlooking Victorian London, Sherlock allows himself a moment of honesty, and it becomes the quote that pulls back the curtain on the enigmatic spear.
The world’s largest detector shows a weak point
This quiet moment is important to the character because it reveals his own “weak spot”. Throughout the film, Sherlock controls his professional relationships by keeping an emotional distance, not revealing what’s really on his mind, and not identifying his next move. Irene is different – she’s someone who surprises him, surprises him, makes him feel like he’s going to be caught. In a world where everything can be predicted, she remains an intriguing mystery. He also sees something of himself in her rebellious spirit, meaning that he is attracted to her even if she is involved in something criminal.
The reason he says “Unfortunately” means that it is vulnerable. The reason so many superheroes wear masks is so their enemies can’t get to the people they love. Holmes’ mask pretends that he doesn’t love anyone, so by admitting that he cares for her he is admitting that he has something that criminals could exploit if they wanted to. He is a huge threat for a man with so many enemies, as well as someone who always wants to stay ahead of the game. The line would gain additional poignancy in the film’s 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: The Shadow Games.
Sherlock’s love leads to pain in ‘A Game of Shadows’
That bond between the two characters becomes the catalyst for revenge in the film’s sequel. Professor Moriarty is known in the Sherlock Holmes saga as the detective’s arch nemesis, matching him in every way in terms of intelligence and strategy. For A Game of Shadowsthe character is immediately made his nemesis when he kills Adler, after she betrays him by giving Holmes information that foils his plans. “It’s been obvious to me for some time that you had accepted your feelings for him,” he says before she accidentally drinks poisoned tea, directly linking their relationship to her murder.
It is a sudden and unexpected death that gives Sherlock the opportunity to explore his feelings for her further, or any kind of closure to their relationship. Holmes would know that he is the cause of her downfall, something he calmly admits when asked what he sees. “Everything,” he replied. “That is my curse.”
With this in mind, comes that “Unfortunately, yes” silence. the most devastating lines in the franchise. Holmes admits that he will miss her, and then realizes that he will have to spend the rest of his life doing just that. The great heroes of cinema can often appear as innocent, but an emotional revelation allows for danger to exist, and in that danger a stronger story. Sherlock Holmes made his legend from solving puzzles, but the most interesting one was in his heart.
