Ivana Baquero ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ Interview: 20th Anniversary

Ivana: I remember when I was shooting it, I really believed that Ofelia was indeed entering this ideal world. In a way, I felt that it gave comfort, and it justified the strength it took to direct that story. The endgame was achieved for her. It made the trip more beautiful, and I was very sure of that.

As I got older, I thought, No, this was a form of manipulation. This was a way for her to get away from the world she lived in. Surely it can’t be true.

Now, as an adult, I’m really going back to the belief that it was real – even if it’s in a spiritual way – but I feel like she’s really going there.

It is interesting how it has been constantly changing. Every time I watch the movie, I discover something new, and my whole perspective changes, not only on the ending, but on the movie as a whole.

That’s one of the beautiful things about the film, and I think that’s why it holds up so well. It has so many interpretations, and is so relevant at any time, that it still speaks to people.
