The movie Wild forest has been causing quite a stir online, and not just because of the stunning visuals and cutting-edge multimedia art. Instead, it’s because a section of parents have decided to ignore the PG13 rating and take their kids to see this stop-motion scene, not expecting some of the film’s darker themes. I was one of those parents, and I’d like to explain why I’m so glad I took my son to see it Wild forest.

The Plot

A young woman named Prue discovers a world of magic and tradition hidden just outside the city limits of Portland, Oregon. Prue and her lazy friend Curtis face real danger, an exciting adventure, and the turmoil of a town bureaucracy in their quest to save her young brother from a powerful witch driven by grief.

The Ranking

Wild forest earned a PG-13 rating from the MPAA, and I understand why. One of the opening scenes in the film deals with suicide in a very dramatic way and, although it is not very graphic, it is certainly not subtle. Later in the story, there are big battles that show just as much violence.

Although the PG-13 rating is warranted, that should not be the only consideration when deciding whether to take your child to see it. It’s true that the MPAA rating can be a valuable tool. However, sometimes it’s just because of these “adult” themes that you should watch these movies with your kids.

The fact that the film Wild forest including some delicate topics, but still packed in such an accessible medium, giving parents a unique opportunity. In a 2016 interview by USA Today, Wild forest Director Travis Knight said: “We respect that children are intelligent, educated and can handle things that adults don’t usually think they can.” Contrary to popular belief, this is true even for topics such as depression, grief, and suicide.

These topics are not for adults only, and stories like Wild forest give parents a chance to introduce these hard concepts in a safe setting. More often than not, it is the parents who are not ready to talk about these topics with their children, but it can be very important to try before they come forward in the real world.

The temptation to protect our children from anything that might disturb them is strong. We always want to do what’s best for them, but sometimes what’s best for them is uncomfortable for us. We need to be able to talk to our children about difficult truths to prepare them for life. In this regard, I believe that Laika Studios has done a very good service to parents in it Wild forest.
