‘Toy Story’ is a timeless tale

Widely hailed as the best animated film of all time, there’s no question why Toy Story still shouting. Like any good Pixar film, the narrative is more than a surface-level children’s story. This particular narrative uses toys in a child’s bedroom to weave a story that is essentially a buddy cop story. Cowboy Woody (Tom Hanks) is one of Andy’s favorite toys but he feels that it can be replaced when the baby gets a space ranger, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Alan). The humor comes in because Buzz has an identity crisis of sorts. He thinks space is a real space explorer instead of just a toy.

Buzz and Woody must overcome their differences in one of the great films about male friendship. Toy Story it is funny in a way that is accessible to children but also so clever that adults still get pleasure from it. Instead what could have been just a sprawling franchise turned into something that only gets better as it goes along.

The Toy Story franchise is full of heart and devastation, as the direct sequel shows. Arguably the best of the franchise as it explores complex issues of abandonment with inclusion Joan Cusack’the iconic character, Jessie. Another Western style doll and part of Woody’s Roundup, Jessie has been abandoned by her previous owner, which leads to feelings of deprivation and claustrophobia. These subjects teach children about the value of treating people with kindness and they are also very sad things in the world. Her song “When She Loved Me” is a shocking retelling of her back story that may be more difficult for the adults watching it.

These stories pack a punch, and that hasn’t changed in the 30 years since the first publication. Toy Story constantly growing and changing with the times in a way that other franchises rarely do. The audience has grown up with Andy to see him pass his toys on to the next generation. As entertainment has progressed, so have the stories.
