Christina recently returned home after a four month stay in hospital. At some point during or after that time, she received news that would change her life forever. Opening up on her and Jamie-Lynn Siglerand podcast So Missythe The sweetest thing star showing:
“[The doctor] I came into my room and he said, “Congratulations, you don’t have MS.” I wasn’t happy at all. Everyone else was so happy. “
Yeah, we bet! She’s been in pain all these years, and it looks like they’ve been treating a condition that she doesn’t have? She’s obviously suffering from something, but now she’s back at “square one” looking for answers.
“You don’t get a bad diagnosis and then all of a sudden I’m better. If anything, I’ve gotten worse. So I’m back at square one where I don’t know what’s going on with me.
Dr. Marwa Kaysey on the podcast to talk about it, and she says that being misdiagnosed is, unfortunately, something “common” – oh, no…
“It’s not like we have something like a pregnancy test that says, ‘Yes, you have it. No, you don’t.’ It is a list of criteria. Almost one in five of those people who were told they had MS – some for decades – didn’t. And most of them were on medication to treat their MS.”
Wow.
So what can Christina do? What are the next steps?
“I’m doing PT three times a week and I’m going to start the research now next week. That’s how new this is. We haven’t even started the research, because it was left up to me to figure it out.”
And that’s just the physical part of it. Living for years thinking you have MS only to find out you wouldn’t leave anyone with layers of complicated emotions. For her, she reveals:
“I’m sure people say, ‘Crybaby, you don’t have MS.'”
Okay, first of all, no one should be saying that. She continues:
“I’m still in shock, and I’m sitting here after sleeping all day yesterday feeling like absolute crap because of the heat, my legs aren’t working, the same thing is happening to me, and yet I have this thing of ‘well you don’t have TI, so you might as well be kidding him.’ You know, in my head I’m like, what can I be doing differently? But this is what I’m sure a lot of people start thinking when they get the misdiagnosis.”
Elsewhere in the chat she also admits that she feels a kind of shame from him:
“It’s weird because I feel like I let everyone down. It’s a weird feeling because I became like this – you and me – the poster children for MS. And everything I was doing. I had a reason. I had a good reason why my day was so bad every day. And now I don’t have a reason and it’s very boring and it’s very confusing to me.”
Jamie Lynn reassures her, however, telling her that she knows the pain she’s feeling is real and to let go of that burden of shame:
“This is what I was trying to talk to him about like attaching to a diagnosis or a label. Like it can give us comfort to think that we have, it could help us by giving us a plan, but it could be overwhelming and confusing. And sometimes you have to take that away and be just how I feel. This is the symptom.”
She continues:
“Like sometimes I think that I myself even you know almost three decades after this is able to get so caught up in what I think should have been or what caused it and maybe it wasn’t. And sometimes we just have to take that away and just acknowledge what we’re going through.”
Such a good friend!! She tells Christina that there is still hope:
“And again, I was one of those people. I heard that news and I was literally saying, ‘You’re going to dance again. You’re going to run again.’ And that may be true. And I’m still going to keep that in my heart and believe that for you because I know that’s what I know and I truly believe, I pray that there’s not something else that would make you think or make you feel like you couldn’t achieve that. I’m going to continue to keep in my heart that this is a blessing for you and again that everything you’ve shared and done up until now has been very generous and very kind and still generous and kind of you to continue to do that. And so give yourself grace, my friend.”
Indeed, Christina. Good advice from Jamie-Lynn.
The Married… with Children alum actually still has a lot of processing to do, says later in the podcast:
“I’ve gone through a lot of depression because of it. But, you know, I lost everything. I lost my job. I’m getting really emotional because it stopped my life. I still have to use a wheelchair when I go to the doctor’s office. I can’t walk from the car to the room. I mean, I’m still here. Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magical happened.”
