The final season of HBO’s The big little lies we may have aired it all the way back in 2019, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still think about that great show. With an impressive cast and engaging storylines, it’s no wonder viewers have been eagerly awaiting the highly anticipated third season. The dark and twisted narratives of that show can be seen in the extraordinary HBO Limited series, Sharp objectswhich aired in 2018. If you’re looking for something similar to binge watching, there’s a less popular Apple TV series released two years ago. combines the best aspects of both dramas.
What is ‘denial’ about?
You may have missed it Denial when it first aired in 2024, but that doesn’t mean you can’t watch it now. This seven-episode limited series follows several different characters, creating many scenes that turn the story even further. We first met Catherine Ravenscroft (Cat Blanchett), a successful journalist who seems to have a perfect life. She has a successful career, her husband, Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen), and a young son, Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee), but on closer inspection, there are many mysteries and abuses in Catherine’s life.
When she receives a book on her doorstep which appears to detail the events of her past relationship with a much younger man called Jonathan Brigstocke (Louis Partridge), Catherine’s secrets are in danger of being exposed. The book is written by Jonathan’s father, Stephen (Kevin Kline), who has a real bone to pick with Catriona, whom he blames for the dissolution of her family. It is what appears a tumultuous, dangerous journey as viewers gain a deeper understanding of the events that transpired in the lives of these characters.
Denial he wastes no time spinning a suspenseful and emotional narrative at work. The series alone would have an interesting enough concept, but the story, from a brilliant mind Alfonso Cuaronstrangely told. Multiple POVs from different characters emphasize that not everyone involved may be a reliable narrator. The narrative also comes to life in background information about Catherine’s history so that viewers can fully experience the events as they unfold. You never know who to trust in the series until the last scene, and this does deny’a mystery in memory of both The big little lies and Sharp objects. The series also benefits from stunning cinematography and a hauntingly beautiful score from O’Connell testified.
Denial Yes a solid watch largely due to its incredibly talented cast. Blanchett is perfect, as always, as a woman trying to get her life back on track. Kline is also a worthy antagonist in their scenes together, and his increasingly desperate performance as Stephen is a sight to behold. Kline and Cohen’s departure from comedy is successful here, as both men step into these extraordinary roles. The supporting cast of the show is just as valuable as the leads. Lesley Manville offers a sad picture of Stephen’s wife, and her picture of a woman is marred by pure grief. Leila George He is also brilliant as the younger version of Catherine, and the many lines of Partridge’s performance indicate that her career will be long. It is important to point out that Smit-McPhee shines as a young man whose life has been deeply affected by his mother’s history. Each actor works to create a tapestry of betrayal and lies that makes it impossible to stop watching.
The series received good reviews when it premiered, but only managed to capture two Emmy nominations (for Outstanding Cinematography and for Blanchett’s performance). Although the series doesn’t get the hype it deserves, it’s a good choice for binge-watching.especially if you are patiently waiting for a third season of The big little lies.
