‘The Last Tour of the Demeter‘Following’ the worst chapter of Dracula
a bit Dracula flicks take the time to find out what the team has Demeter knowledge of their harrowing journey from Port Varna (modern day Bulgaria) to England with a Count on board, but The Last Journey of Demeter focuses entirely on this often understudied chapter. Yes, it’s been done before in some adaptations – perhaps most notably the BBC’s entertaining re-imagining of Dracula – but even they don’t take this damned trip at the right time of day. Although the novel lacks many of the details, The Last Journey of Demeter filling the sleepless nights with complex characters like Clemens (Corey Hawkins) and the horse Anna (Franciosi’s dream). As Captain Eliot (Liam Cunningham) fight to ensure that the Demeter reaching its destination, the merchant ship undergoes its most severe test, with a merciless Dracula (Botet Javier) to regain his strength the only way he knows how.
Most Dracula features do their best to create a kind of allure around the classic literary vampire. We can see this in the performance of the icon Bela Lugosithe pregnant Christopher Leeand even Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker’s Dracula for free – a film in which, ironically, The Last Journey of Demeter find its source. But while most pictures try to take Dracula further than his unholy desires, in this picture he is just a bloody creature unable to reason with him. But it’s that dramatic appeal (we need more monsters that are actually just monsters) that sets the film apart. With eerie scenes and a solid cast that also includes David Dastmalchian, The Last Journey of Demeter it’s not normal for you Dracula farebut it’s an interesting period monster movie worth hopping on board just in time for Halloween.
‘Dracula’ adaptation has never looked more like ‘Alien’
Unsurprisingly, one of the greatest motivations for a director Andrew Øvredal when doing this dark and gloomy look Draculathe most unexplored chapter wasn’t another historical gothic horror – it really was Ridley Scottand Alien. Although the horror films could not be more different in terms of their settings or antagonists, whoever started the Demeter the team will see a clear appearance. Even the The way Javier Botet plays the lanky, bat-like Dracula is a bit more alien than the usual vampire adaptations. Of course, The Last Journey of Demeter taking the place of the interstellar A boatman with a 19th century ship slowly crossing the Mediterranean Sea, grounding the picture in a reality of the past rather than the future.
