Madonnaand return to MTV Video Music Awards it was supposed to look like another victory lap. Instead, the 68-year-old walked away with seven awards while also raising concerns about what’s to come.
Her family and friends are now urging her to slow down after a ten-minute opening act featuring Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Debi Mazar and Julia Garner.
However, insiders say that Madonna is already thinking beyond the VMAs and towards another tour.
Madonna’s VMAs brought back more anxiety than celebration
The numbers alone made the night look triumphant. Madonna led the 2026 VMAs with seven wins, including Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration for “Bring Your Love” with Sabrina Carpenter, Best Dance, Best Album, Best Long-Form Video, Best Choreography and Best Cinematography.
She also returned as a VMA performer for the first time in 23 years. Carpenter joined her for “Bring Your Love”, and Charli XCX appeared for “Danceteria Afterhours”. Julia Garner and Debi Mazar also appeared in the show.
But the response online was more complicated. Viewers focused on Madonna’s heavily strapped left knee, her movements and her renewed accusations of lip-synching.
The same criticism came after her Coachella appearance earlier this year, when The Blast reported that some fans questioned how much of her performance was live.
Madonna also joked that she needed to remove a laser prop from her back, and when Charli XCX and Troye Sivan presented her with the best dance award, she was briefly unsure which award she had won.
Madonna’s family tells her to ‘take it easy’
According to experts who spoke to the Daily MailMadonna’s inner circle has been telling her to slow down.
“She’s having everyone around her tell her she’s slowing down,” one source said, adding that Madonna wants to have “more energy than she’s ever had” while family and friends keep telling her, “Take it easy.
The same source said that she is already “showing signs that she wants to go on the road” behind “Confessions II,” despite concerns from those around her.
Warner Records released the album on July 3 as a follow-up to 2005’s “Confessions on a Dance Floor.”
That desire to tour would create tension because the question now is not whether Madonna can perform but what level of performance her team thinks is reasonable.
Madonna and her team are divided over another tour
One insider described a “big discussion” between Madonna and her team about the format of any future live shows.
Madonna is said to want to “do something big,” but the source said she knows she may not be able to mount the extensive tours she’s completed in previous decades.
Her team is reportedly pushing for something much smaller, perhaps no more than ten shows in ten cities.
That warning is partly rooted in Madonna’s medical history. In 2023, her Signature Tour was canceled after manager Guy Oseary announced that she had developed a serious bacterial infection and spent several days in intensive care.
Madonna later told Jay Shetty on “On Purpose” that she had sepsis, woke up after being unconscious for four days and had been on a ventilator. She remembered struggling with extreme weakness afterwards.
Still, the Daily Mail An insider confirmed that Madonna is not looking at the situation as a setback.
“Madonna is full of energy,” the source said. “She just wants to get straight back to work.”

Tours aren’t the only major project she’s focused on.
Second Daily Mail The source said the success of “Confessions II” has sparked interest in a long-shot Madonna biopic, with Warner and A24 among the companies said to be interested in the project.
Madonna has already confirmed why the original version flopped. In June, she said she and Universal had “fallen out” over the budget after spending years developing the film, in which Julia Garner was attached to produce.
“I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had an extraordinary life, so I needed a big budget,” she explained.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Madonna even studied doing the project for less money in Serbia, while a Netflix series that could come together did not meet.
According to the insider, Madonna is still not willing to compromise for too long because controlling how her story is told is important to her.
The source described her as a “discipline control,” but said she believes that such control is necessary after watching other stars lose authority over how their lives were portrayed.
The insider specifically mentioned Madonna’s concerns about the Michael Jackson television biopic and said she was afraid that the low budget could flatten many moments of her career.
Madonna’s next move could test her willingness to back down
Her seven VMA wins confirmed that “Confessions II” has kept her creative momentum moving, but insiders suggest that those around her are trying to convince Madonna that continuing doesn’t have to mean continuing exactly as before.
Along with the possible tour and renewed biopic push, the Daily Mail the source also pointed to another music video expected in October, suggesting that her schedule could remain busy regardless of a major tour.
That makes the debate about retirement not what has been rebalanced.
Madonna has spent much of her career refusing to accept boundaries imposed by age, gender or controversy. Her team’s narrative challenge now convinces her that reducing her journey or slowing her pace would not destroy that legacy.
For Madonna, however, the instinct seems to change. Even after a VMAs performance that left some worried fans and family members telling her to take it easy, those close to her say she’s already looking toward what’s next.
