The number one movie on Prime Video this week is the new rom-com The Love Hypothesis, adapted from the novel by Ali Hazelwood. Directed by Claire Scanlon, the movie stars Tom Bateman and Lili Reinhart as a professor and a PhD student who enter into a fake relationship, each for their own reasons. It’s a fairly formulaic romance built on classic tropes, but the film has received largely favorable reviews from critics and has drawn high viewership. ‘High Life’ (2018)
A science fiction drama by celebrated French filmmaker Claire Denis, High Life revolves around a group of criminals who are sent on a suicide mission to space as subjects in a scientific experiment. When the mission gets botched and the entire crew gets wiped out, except for one member named Monte, he sets out to save himself and his infant daughter while uncovering sinister secrets about the mission. Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, André Benjamin, Mia Goth, and Lars Eidinger star as the main characters.
Intensely hypnotic and visually extraordinary, High Life is best defined as a bold art-house sci-fi drama rather than a mainstream space thriller. Simultaneously challenging and confusing, and often difficult to process, the film haunts its viewer with a poignant and profound study of humanity on the verge of collapse. High Life premiered at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival and has been widely praised for its refreshing perspective on the age-old question of what it truly means to be human. It is considered one of the most perfectly made sci-fi films of the last decade.

‘Midday Black Midnight Blue’ (2022)
A drama film directed by Samantha Soule and Daniel Talbott, Midday Black Midnight Blue follows the emotional story of Ian, who lives an isolated life in an empty house. As he continues to grieve the loss of his beloved, Liv, who died two decades ago, Ian’s memories and pain become harder to bear, making his daily life darker and prompting him to find ways to let go of the past. Chris Stack stars as Ian and Soule as the love of his life, with Will Pullen, Gloria Alcala, Merritt Wever, and McCaleb Burnett in other notable roles.
Midday Black Midnight Blue is a heavy, dark drama that explores the deep, lingering pain of grief, isolation, and how deeply all that can impact a person. On its premiere, the film earned a mixed reception, with some praising the poetic take on the concept of letting go of the past while others criticized the esoteric narrative style. But both critics and fans concur that the film’s arresting cinematography and strong performances make Midday Black Midnight Blue an engaging film that explores grief.

‘Superman’ (2025)
Featuring the iconic DC superhero’s return to live-action cinema, James Gunn‘s Superman is the first film in Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. Starring David Corenswet as the iconic titular superhero, the film follows Clark Kent / Superman as he deals with intense public scrutiny after getting entangled in an international conflict perpetrated by his archenemy, Lex Luthor, which he sets out to fix with his co-worker and love interest, Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult stars as supervillain Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois, with Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and more in other key roles.
At the time of its premiere, Superman surpassed all expectations, surprising and awing fans and critics alike with its grounded realism and sheer earnestness. The film brings a more hopeful and heartwarming tone to Superman’s character, a sharp contrast to the grim, dark vibe of the DCEU, while also retaining the eccentric and bizarre aspects of the original comics. A superhero film that speaks to our times in a way most movies don’t, James Gunn’s interpretation not only earned widespread acclaim and accolades, but it’s also easily the best live-action Superman movie of this century.
