Netflix officially pulls Zack Snyder’s action from its library

After a short foray into the festival circuit with the passion project The last picturedirector Zack Snyder preparing to return to franchise filmmaking with a remake of Escape from New York. Snyder has spent most of his career working with prefabricated buildings, at least when he’s not designing his own. In recent years, he has worked on a series of big budget projects with Netflix, with mixed results. The two franchises he was expected to lead – Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon – they were abandoned due to regime changes and unprecedented performance. The filmmaker had a similar experience while at Warner Bros. Interestingly, the biggest box office underperformer from his WB era is streaming on Netflix right now, but only for a little while longer.

That film marked his first original project, after the remake of Dawn of the Deadand adaptations of the progressive comic books 300 and Watchmen. This was before Snyder was handed the reins to the DC Extended Universe, which began with his 2013 film The Man of Steel. Snyder took great liberties at this point; it’s when he directed the ambitious sci-fi fantasy currently streaming on Netflix, as well as the gorgeous animated fantasy that could have spawned its own franchise. However, both films underperformed commercially, ending all franchise plans.

No one gets through these stories entirely on their own.

Usually the best fantasy is just somewhere you would like to live.

04

How do you make a living out there?
Even in fantasy someone has to pay for the horse.

Power cycles · Main video · From 2022

Middle-earth

You belong somewhere old enough that the mountains have names and someone can still tell you who gave them. The middle ground is for people who believe that doing the right thing is worth doing even when it is not ready in life.

  • This is the only world on the list where doing good is understood as a very long loss, fought anyway, by people who will never see how it ends.
  • You are drawn to grandeur, to white cities and deep forges and the feeling that almost everything you come in contact with is older than your entire family line.
  • Circles of Power is set in the last good age before everything goes wrong, which gives every quiet scene a slightly unbearable weight.
  • You would take the hard way, and you would take it on foot.

One Piece · Manga from 1997 · Netflix 2023

The Great Line

You want the sea, a crew, and of course no one tells you where you are allowed to go. The Grand Line is the world for people whose main ambition in life is to find out what’s over there.

  • One Piece has run for decades on one very simple engine, which is a group of people who each want something impossible and have decided to go and bring it together.
  • You gather people. Your ideal team is a set of misfits who were each suspended somewhere else before you showed up and gave them a better idea.
  • The world is huge and intentionally offensive, and the emotional split hits land harder because of that than in spite of it.
  • You’d be navigating knowing the map is running out, which is pretty much the whole point of it.

The Witcher · Netflix · From 2019

The Continent

You would rather be feared and useful, than useless and useless. The Continent is a world where the aliens are a direct part of the work and where the people become complicated.

  • Wizards get paid to do what anyone else does and are resentful of their existence at all, which is a trade off that most people would refuse and you would probably accept.
  • You are not really confused about which side is good, largely because that question tends to disappoint the Continent.
  • The best of these stories are not about the fight. They’re about someone with a strict code that’s been circulated over and over again to take care of people.
  • You would take the coin, finish the job correctly, and be out of town before the story was told wrong.

Percy Jackson · Disney + · From 2023

Camp Half-Blood

You want the myths to be real and unravel in the real world, and you want to find out at around thirteen that you were never as close to normal as everyone told you.

  • Percy Jackson takes our oldest stories and drops them into car parks and diners, which makes the gods a lot funnier and a lot worse.
  • You’d be the kid that every school gave up, who turned out to be built for something no one thought of for a test.
  • The series is really about friendship rather than fate, and it says so loudly every time prophecy tries to get in the way.
  • Camp Half-Blood is the real fantasy here: a place where what you’ve struggled with everywhere else is what belongs to you.
