Adam Driver Has Six-Word Response to ‘Girls’ Revival Amid Lena Dunham’s Drama

An actor Adam Driver finally breaking his silence on the “Girls” reboot. Although he appeared in all six seasons of the HBO comedy series, mostly as the on-again, off-again boyfriend. by Lena Dunhamin character, the two apparently fell out after the showrunner released her memoir “Famesick” earlier this year. In the fascinating book, Dunham said that Driver threw a chair at her when she forgot her lines, screamed in her face, and even once punched a hole in the wall of his trailer.

Before Adam Driver was cast as the villainous First Order enforcer Kylo Ren in the hit “Star Wars” series, Driver’s claim to fame was appearing as Adam Sackler on “Girls.” Although the show is returning for a five-episode limited revival, his character is unlikely to return, given his apparent falling out with showrunner Lena Dunham.

In the first release, it was announced that Marnie Allison Williams, Jessa Jemima Kirke, Shoshana Zosia Mamet, and Elijah Andrew Rannells would return. Many fans hoped that Driver would still return in some way, and that his return was kept as a surprise. Others, however, were skeptical of Dunham’s claims against him. Now Driver has finally broken his silence.

Adam Driver wishes the “Best Of Luck” to his former ‘girls’

While promoting his crime drama “Paper Tiger,” CinemaBlend asked the Oscar-nominated actor if he plans to return for the “Girls” reboot. The driver’s response was clear: “No, but I wish them the best.”

It remains to be seen how Dunham will handle his character’s departure from the franchise. The last time fans saw the character, he was still dating Jemima Kirke’s Jessa, which affected her relationship with Hannah, as Adam and Hannah were involved for most of the series.

Lena Dunham was surprised by the response to Adam’s character

While promoting her memoir “Famesick,” Dunham admitted that the roller-coaster relationship between Hannah and Adam was about to reveal a toxic relationship. However, she quickly noticed that fans thought their antics were “funny” and “sexy”, which was not what she intended.

“What was also interesting were these dynamics, which were in their lives scary at times, lonely – these would be recreated on television, and people thought they were funny, fun and sometimes sexual!” Dunham told the New York Times in April 2026.

“I didn’t write Adam [Driver’s] character to be a romantic hero, and in the end, everyone was like, ‘I want a boyfriend like that. I want a boyfriend who throws two by fours and spanks me,’ and that’s not what I was going for, but it was definitely a lesson in terms of: What we want can’t be resolved from what we’ve been through and what we fear,” she said.

Some of the cast and creators of “Girls” did an oral history with The Hollywood Reporter to celebrate the series, which began its final episode in 2017. During the interview, producer Judd Apatow revealed that the show was supposed to include a close-up in which the audience could see the “finished” Driver on screen. However, HBO would not allow the character’s ejaculation and bodily fluids to be shown on camera.

“From the beginning, we were aware that what we were doing was sexually suggestive, and that’s what made it interesting and new and fun… “And HBO said, ‘If this is in the show, we could lose our license.’ We were like, ‘Oh my God, we’ve found the line at HBO.'”

The scene would have taken place in an episode in the second season of “Girls,” after Hannah cast Adam. Although he starts dating a girl named Natalia after meeting her mother at Alcoholics Anonymous, Adam starts to spin after running into Hannah on the street. After breaking her sobriety, he takes Natalia back to his apartment, where things get a little rough for Natalia. The scene itself was meant to be very uncomfortable, and some publications at the time even compared it to sexual assault.

Lena Dunham Says She Wrote About Adam’s Driver ‘Honestly’

Even though some fans have questioned the allegations Dunham made in her sensational book, Dunham told PEOPLE magazine that she wrote about Driver in an “honest” way.

“For better or worse, these were our first jobs. I think Adam went on a very special journey because he was on the tour of the show and then became a major movie star at the same time,” said Dunham, referring to Driver’s rise to fame in the “Star Wars” series.

“And again, the goal wasn’t to make Adam look like he was in any way outside of the show, but just to talk about how complicated and confusing those first experiences of trying to be a boss were,” she said.

For his part, Driver only answered one question about Dunham’s allegations against him at the premiere of “Paper Tiger” in Cannes earlier this year. “I have no idea about that,” Driver said, according to Deadline. “I’m saving everything for my book.”

The tongue-in-cheek response quickly drew laughter from the crowd.

Adam Driver is also not returning to ‘Star Wars’

This may not be a great week for Adam Driver fans. Days before he confirmed that he would not be appearing in the “Girls” reboot, he also revealed that he had no plans to return to “Star Wars” during a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show.

“It’s over. No more ‘Star Wars.’ We tried. We tried to make another one. But they were like, ‘No, he’s dead,'” said Driver, adding “The ship has sailed” on “The Hunt for Ben Solo.” However, fans have their fingers crossed that the character could appear in some capacity in a future “Star Wars” project.

Fortunately, Driver is also attached to two major projects. After his recent roles in “Paper Tiger” and “Misty Green,” Adam Driver is set to work with the director Michael Mann again after his lead role in “Ferrari.” Driver will play the villain in the series “Heat”, based on the book co-written by Mann in 2022.

On the Nov. 6 episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Driver also revealed why he accepted the role of the villain Mister Sinister in the upcoming “X-Men” reboot, after a “long tradition” of turning down roles in the MCU. The “X-Men” reboot is currently scheduled for a May 5, 2028 theatrical release.
