The rest of Dylan Sprouse’s ‘Suite Life’ was only 5 cents

Dylan Sprouse once starred in one of Disney Channel’s most recognizable sitcoms, but the financial reward from his continued success has been surprisingly small.

At a reunion with an old partner, the actor revealed that his remaining earnings from “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” were just five cents.

The disclosure opened up a wider conversation about the unusual contracts, limited resources and compensation arrangements that shaped the show’s success.

For a series that enjoyed years of great growth and repeat television broadcasts, it was almost impossible to believe Dylan Sprouse’s remaining earnings.

In Tuesday’s episode of his podcast “Wildmen”, the 34-year-old reunited with his former co-star Phill Lewis, who portrayed hotel manager Marion Moseby, and discussed how little he got from the Disney Channel sitcom.

Sprouse, who played Zack Martin alongside his twin brother Cole, explained that he only received one payment remaining for the entire series, which ran from 2005 to 2008.

Even more shockingly, the payment covered only one episode: a 2006 screening featuring the cast of “Hannah Montana”, including Miley Cyrus.

The check was worth five cents, an amount Sprouse said wasn’t even enough to buy a coffee. He expressed his sadness at the lack of income from a show that had been a major part of his career.

“In a time where residuals would have been good, not one payment for being one of the most popular shows,” said according to the Daily Mail.

The five percent payment became even more difficult to reconcile with the reported success of the show when Dylan Sprouse recalled achievements that had been with him for years.

He recalled showrunner Danny Kallis walking on stage with a newspaper and announcing that “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” was beating HBO’s hit drama “The Sopranos” in the ratings.

The memory still haunted Sprouse, who found it difficult to understand how he created a program that could compete with such a prestigious series with so little remaining pay for his team.

“That pops into my head every once in a while when I go, ‘And we still haven’t got one f***ing left,'” he recalled.

Lewis also talked about the huge reach of the Disney Channel sitcom, explaining that it was broadcast in “more than 90 countries around the world.”

He said the network aired the show over and over again, sometimes four or five times in one night, because young viewers kept coming back to it.

“They put on two episodes on Tuesday, and they ran them straight all day,” Lewis explained.

The reach of the show made the limited compensation of the actors especially remarkable. However, Lewis suggested that the issue was related to the unusual contracts Disney Channel actors had to sign, rather than just the performance of the show.

Lewis explained that the cast had signed what he described as a “strange contract” that allowed Disney Channel to produce many more episodes than a traditional television season while counting them as one season.

The arrangement meant that players could complete more than a normal season’s workload without receiving the corresponding pay increase.

“They called it one season because they didn’t have to pay us a lump sum,” Lewis said, describing how the settlement affected the team’s compensation. “So we had that, which was very strange.”

Sprouse also questioned the resources Disney Channel was spending to produce the sitcom, suggesting that the network’s handling of the sitcom did not reflect its popularity.

Despite its success, he said that the executives treated the series as the “ugly duckling” in the channel’s lineup.

He said the show was “popular,” but also “very underfunded” by the network.

Sprouse compared his early acting career to child labor

Dylan Sprouse’s recent conversations also revealed the less glamorous side of his youth in the entertainment industry.

He previously spoke about the demands of growing up on television, comparing the experience to child labor in a September 2026 episode of his “Wildmen” podcast.

“Some kids used to work in coal mines and guard the mine cart door when they were 15,” he said, adding, “We just sang and danced. It’s still child labor.”

Sprouse explained that working as a child often felt like holding down a regular job, with set hours and the expectation of showing up for work.

In his words, “It’s a day job. You go in, you clock in, you clock out, you have a cubicle, you work. Obviously, you’re on a stage, and it’s different, but it’s the same hours. You work it that way.”

The actor also described the lasting emotional impact of spending so much of his childhood on set. “It feels like my self-esteem for a long time was fundamentally tied to my ability to work and be on set,” he admitted.

Sprouse’s reflection on his early years in television wasn’t the only development linking him to the Disney Channel in 2026.

The star had also returned to the network in a very different role, marking a new appearance on the stage that introduced him to the audience as Zack Martin.

In August 2026, Sprouse joined the guest cast of the animated comedy “Big City Greens” for its fifth season. He voiced Tyler, a character who takes Gloria Green on a date and encounters an unexpected situation when he visits her family home.

The episode, titled “Gloria Green,” put Sprouse in the middle of a Disney production in stark contrast to the live-action sitcom that made him famous.

Disney announced its casting on August 6, along with other guest stars including Stephen King, Luke Combs, Chad Michael Murray and Kevin Smith. The season premiered on Disney Channel on August 21, with episodes arriving on Disney+ the following day.

The appearance marked Sprouse’s return to Disney Channel some 15 years after “The Suite Life on Deck” ended in 2011.
