Collin Gosselinthe former caretaker pushes back against him Kate Gosselina reference to his childhood, adding a new voice to the controversy surrounding a mother and son who were lost.
Colleen Conradwho previously dated Collin’s father, Jon Gosselin, has questioned how Kate’s comments about her son’s mental health are being used to explain their troubled relationship. Her public defense comes as Collin’s memoir brings his allegations of abuse back into the spotlight.
Kate, of “Jon & Kate Plus 8” fame, defended her decision to put Collin in a mental institution when he was a child, saying it was necessary for his safety and the well-being of the family. Collin has disputed her account, and Conrad’s intervention has added another dimension to the long-standing family feud.
Colin’s memoir has led to a critical examination of his childhood, in which his mother, Kate, is now defending herself against sending him to a psychiatric hospital. According to the former reality star, Collin was taken to a psychiatric facility for his safety and the safety of others after displaying violent behavior.
Collin, 22, has disputed his mother’s account and has said he accepted three independent psychiatric evaluations. His memoir, “In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood”, details allegations of abuse during his upbringing, including allegations that Kate kept him in a basement room for years.
Kate has disputed her allegations, and the competing accounts have drawn new attention to their situation. The conflict has also taken those who know Collin outside the context of his time with his mother.
Now, Colleen Conrad, who dated Jon Gosselin from 2014 to 2021, has publicly defended Collin, questioning how his mental health history is being discussed while the family’s controversial stories continue to play out.
Public Defense Adds New Voice to Family Force
Conrad spoke out in defense of Collin in an Instagram post shared on October 26, calling Kate’s comments “very troubling.” Conrad, a psychiatric nurse practitioner with more than 35 years of healthcare experience, said she wanted to address the claims carefully and truthfully, drawing on her professional background in psychiatric diagnosis, symptoms, and medications.
“When Collin came to live with us, I did not observe the symptoms or behaviors that I would expect based on some of the diagnoses he received, and I did not observe the behaviors that have since been publicly described,” Conrad wrote. “In consultation with his treating physician, we gradually discontinued his medications under medical supervision.”
According to PEOPLE, Conrad acknowledged that mental health conditions are serious but said they shouldn’t be used to dismiss Collin’s account of his childhood. “Mental health conditions are real, complex, and deserving of compassion and understanding.
However, they should never be used to dismiss the experience of another’s life or to avoid legitimate questions about the past. I believe that these cases deserve to be treated with honesty, responsibility and respect for the people involved,” she concluded.
Kate Gosselin’s former nanny describes alleged mistreatment of Collin
The concerns raised by Conrad have gained more attention following allegations from another person who spent time in Gosselin’s home.
Ashley H., who was a housekeeper and housekeeper for Kate, spoke publicly about what she says she saw while working for the family, adding another account to the controversy about Collin’s childhood.
Ashley said Kate treated Collin differently from her other children and said she saw the reality star cuddling him several times. “She really treated Collin differently,” Ashley said, adding that she was “110 percent abusing Colin.”
She also mentioned what she saw as Kate’s “distinct hatred” towards her son, saying, “You could see it. Ashley said the home operated under strict rules, saying the children weren’t allowed to leave toys lying around and the home had to “always look uninhabited.”
As reported by The Blast, Ashley’s allegations have led some fans to call for a criminal investigation into Kate, with online commentators expressing concern over what the former nanny said she saw. The allegations remain Ashley’s claims, adding to the competing accounts of the family’s rift.
The allegations extend beyond painful childhood memories
While the former nanny’s account has added to the questions about Collin’s upbringing, the allegations in his memoir go beyond his claims of abuse at home. In his memoir, the 22-year-old author also said that his mother, Kate, separated him from his siblings and contributed to the breakdown of those relationships.
Collin said he was tied at both the wrists and ankles and locked in part of the basement of the family’s home for hours. He then said that Kate had convinced his brothers and sisters that something was wrong with him, thus alienating him from the family.
The memorial also raised questions about the money the Gosselin children earned while on television. Collin said documents showed that Kate gave hundreds of thousands of dollars from a joint trust intended for the sisters.
The Blast reported that Kate acknowledged in a 2019 court filing that she had borrowed two payments of $50,000 from the children’s trust to cover expenses.
The financial claims add another dimension to the family dispute, as Collin’s account continues to draw attention to both his childhood experiences and the unresolved tension surrounding his mother.
Kate Gosselin draws a strong line as Collin demands accountability

As Collin continues to talk about his childhood, Kate shows little enthusiasm for taking back her disagreement with Collin’s terms. She has denied her previous “lie detector test” offer, and now she stands firm, as his book settles the controversy surrounding his claims.
Collin, meanwhile, has said that his mother’s alleged abuse had to rebuild their relationship. As The Blast reported, He has emphasized that he has already shared his experiences publicly and that he believes that Kate is the next step. Their front position has left little sign of the aliens’ progress.
With both mother and son standing by their accounts, the possibility of a reconciliation remains uncertain. Collin’s memoir has given him a platform to tell his side of the story, but it remains an open question whether Kate will respond to his calls for accountability.
Will Kate Gosselin and Collin Gosselin ever reconcile, or has their family rift grown too deep to mend?
