Over the last few years, you’ve been releasing singles like “Raw” and “Down.” What has this chapter of your music career taught you about yourself as an artist?
Victoria: This independent era has taught me that I am capable of much more than I ever imagined. When you’re independent, there are a lot of benefits – obviously, there’s creative freedom – but it’s also very difficult. It’s hard not to have that big infrastructure, funding and resources behind you.
When I was signed to a label many years ago, so many decisions were made for me that I didn’t even know about. Now, being independent, I am involved in every decision and every aspect of the creative process.
I think I have shown myself that I am smart and that I can handle everything. It has helped me learn to trust myself and work harder than I knew I could.
